Several studies revealed that teenagers today show very indifferent and unconcerned attitudes towards teenage pregnancy. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention did a study which revealed that approximately 17% of sexually active girls say they use the rhythm method as their primary form of birth control, which only proves ineffective 25% of the time, said Joyce Abma, a social scientist at the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, and the report's lead author. What is the rhythm method? The rhythm method, when used as birth control is when a person uses a calendar estimating a woman's likelihood of fertility, based on a record of the length of previous menstrual cycles. Teens may have been using another form of birth control at the same time, but the statistical increase of sexually active teens and the number of those using the rhythm method for birth control is considered worrisome due to the unreliability of the rhythm method. The increase in the rather unreliable rhythm method may be partly to blame for the increase in the number teenagers having babies. Another reason for the higher birth rates could be because of the seemingly unconcerned attitudes that teenager possess about sexual practices and pregnancy. They just don't seem to be too worried about the repercussions of rather inexperienced and premature sexual practices. More About Teen Pregnancy * Teen Birth Rate Rise in California Takes Toll The survey was conducted at a time of some highly publicized pregnancies of unmarried teens, including Bristol Palin, the daughter of former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney Spear's younger sister. The 2007 movie Juno, a happy-ending tale of a teen girl's accidental pregnancy, was popular at the time as well, which despite being a wonderful story and movie, was criticized that it seemingly underestimated the severity of teenage girls getting pregnant and almost minimized the significance and meaning of bringing life into the world at such a young and inexperienced age. The pregnancy attitude survey results were based on face-to-face interviews by female interviewers, with nearly 2,800 teens ages 15 through 19 at their homes in the years 2006 through 2008. The statistics are rather overwhelming, giving evidence as to possibly why teenage pregnancy has not decreased over the years. Another survey released on Wednesday, conducted by the government, stated that more teenagers said it is OK for an unmarried female to have a baby. The study revealed that approximately 64 percent of teenage boys said it's OK for an unmarried female to have a child. This is an increase from 50 percent in 2002. More than 70 percent of teen girls said it's OK for an unmarried female to have a child, up from 65 percent. Researchers found that about 42 percent of never-married teens had had sex at least once. Of those teens, 98 percent said they had used birth control at least once, with condoms being the most common choice. These survey conclusions now in 2010 were the same as the results discovered in 2002. Perhaps more education on sexual practices, the implications of teen pregnancy and morality may be in order. Without, preaching any "right or wrongs", perhaps pregnancy and the idea of bringing life into the world should be taken more seriously by those who do not give the undertaking enough worth or import.
